Wine Consumer Jury Competition

Wine Consumer Jury Competition

Since 1987, the Wine Consumer Jury competition has been offering the opportunity each year to amateur and passionate consumers to blind taste, rate and express themselves on wines from the Rhone Valley appellations.

It is the only official competition where the members of the jury are exclusively amateur consumers and non-professionals in the wine trade.

An approved competition
Placed under the control of the General Directorate of Consumption and Fraud Repression and other recognised consumer associations, this competition has obtained community approval by ministerial decision.

Knowledge of wines – To know wines better is to appreciate them better.

Each year, a large part of activities is devoted to the education of tasters: introduction to wine tasting at the Wine University of Suze-la Rousse, commentary on food-wine pairings, presentation of wines in competition, etc.

Meeting with winegrowing men and traditions
Without taking part in the tasting sessions, the winegrowers and wine merchants are nevertheless present throughout the day: welcoming at the wineries, visits to the cellars and above all a closing dinner where all the producers are invited to present their wines. Finally, an exceptional induction chapter led by the Confrérie des Maîtres Vignerons de Vacqueyras will plunge you into the magic of winemaking tradition.

Press Reception

The Vacqueyras AOC is a must for the press and many journalists visit us every year.
The American tasters, Jeb Dunnuck, Joe Czerwinski from the Wine Advocate, Anna Lee from Wine Enthusiast or Josh Raynolds for Vinous, but also the British tasters, Matt Walls from Decanter and Richard Hemming for the Jancis Robinson site honour us every year with their presence on the appellation to taste the latest vintage.
We also have the opportunity to welcome journalists specialised in wine, writing for national and international magazines, who come to meet the winegrowers and report on our Cru.

In addition, Vacqueyras welcomes influencers, who come to discover the appellation and share their experiences via social media.

The fraternity

Created on 4 May 1984, the birth of the fraternity (La Confrèrie) in the village of Vacqueyras was euphoric and helped to strengthen the links between the ‘men of vine and wine’. The aim of this association is:

  • to perpetuate the memory of the famous Provençal troubadour, RAIMBAUT who was born in Vacqueyras between 1156 and 1160,
  • to encourage people to discover and love the village of Vacqueyras and the surrounding region, to act in favour of the wines and terroir of Vacqueyras
  • to do everything possible to ensure that the originality and quality of Vacqueyras’ wines are recognised and promoted by all
  • to organise events where all those who contribute to making Vacqueyras wine known can meet each other
  • to spread the influence of Vacqueyras wines in France and abroad

The Avignon Festival

Each year, three vintages of Cru Vacqueyras, red, rosé and white, are the ambassadors of the appellation throughout the festival. These vintages are selected blind by a jury of professionals, then presented to the press and unveiled to the public the day before the launch of the Avignon Festival. During this day, a festival artist is inducted into the Confrérie des Maîtres Vignerons de Vacqueyras.

These three ambassadors of the appellation wear the festival poster on their packaging and are tasted during the highlights with the artists and guests of this great cultural event. They’re available at the Festival Boutique, Place de l’Horloge, at the Halles d’Avignon, and are honoured each year during the Wine Bar evening set up by Inter Rhône.

The winegrowers are true “actors”, knowing how to enhance the unique characteristics of the terroir, whose diversity allows for meticulous and precious blends and enchant the public every year with a new vintage created with their expertise.
